Good old Texas, always a day late and a dollar short. Because of this 'natural' occurrence we in some states of America celebrate Juneteenth., that's June 19th Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas in 1865. Things to know about the Juneteenth celebration.

  •  1. Slavery was proclaimed abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 and put in effect January 1st in 1863.
  • 2. People (slaves) in Texas had no idea about this. Being such a huge state and living during the unfortunate times when the information age hadn't been invented, we can understand the delay in knowledge and being out of the loop with politics, human rights, equality, women's health care...
  • 3.During that time slavery was occurred more in East Texas, it was not as common in the Western areas of Texas, particularly the Hill Country, where most German-Americans were opposed to the practice. The Emancipation meant much of nothing to Texas slaves because they were held under the control of the Confederation.
  • 4. The announcement was made in Galveston, Texas by Union General, Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865.
  •  5. Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. Legend has it while standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of “General Order No. 3
'The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere'

I'm just so happy my  home state of Texas finally received the invitation to move into the free world and let their slaves free so we were able to educate ourselves and become productive individuals.
No longer are we fined, punished or thrown in jail for teaching people of color to read. More specifically, teaching slaves to read. The general fear was if you taught slaves how to write they might, you know, think about their lot in life. They may not be happy about it. They just might educate themselves. And then the nightmare would begin: they might educate others

June 19, 1865 is the day Texas (mainly East Texas) finally set their slaves free. Better known as Juneteenth, it is the oldest nationally celebrated recognition of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin on September 22, 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today African Americans and people of all races take the time to celebrate Juneteenth as a way to highlight  the great progress accomplished in the areas of social consciousness, education and ability. It is all about family and community.

In honor of the holiday 9 fantastic authors (myself included, lol) have lowered the prices of their books. Where it was once illegal to teach a slave to read, we as a people are now able to leaf through the pages of our favorite books whenever we have the desire.
