Today, June 14th is Flag Day.
This celebration was initiated by Bernard J. Cigrand. He lobbied for years for respect of the flag and for this celebration, dying before seeing his wish accomplished.
In 1777 Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes. Before 1912 the design and features of the flag was left up to the flag maker, that was until President William Taft decided what he wanted it to look like. The U.S. flag has been modified many times, the latest has been in use since 1960.
I love driving through the neighborhoods and seeing the flags at the edge of each driveway. More than just seeing the poles, I am impressed with the fact each house was designed with the labeled 'flag' hole at the curb. Goes to show no matter what, American citizens stand behind their flag.
